How do you calculate the maximum load requirement for your equipment's castor wheel?
Calculating the maximum load capacity for your wheel is slightly less simple than dividing the transported load with the number of wheels. To get an accurate load measurement, you need to take into account 5 factors—
-
Payload being moved
-
The dead weight of the equipment itself (excluding wheels)
-
Number of castors fitted on the equipment
-
Uneven flooring
-
Type of environment
To calculate the required load capacity of each castor, we divide the total load of a transport units with the total number of wheels minus one, as due to e.g. uneven floors or unequal loading not all of the wheels will carry the load equally at all times.
Load per wheel = (E + Z) / (n-1)
E = Dead weight of the equipment
Z = Payload
n = Number of castors or wheels
Example – For calculating the static load for each wheel for an equipment of 4 wheels having deadweight of 20 kg and requiring to handle a load of 100 kg –
Load per wheel = (100 + 20) / (4 - 1) kg
= 40 kg
Note: The equation however does not guarantee the load capacity just yet. This is the load under optimal conditions for the specific wheel you choose. Therefore you would need to choose the material according to the type of environment it is used in. For example, rubber wheels cannot sustain the maximum load capacity at extremely high temperatures wheras cast iron wheels can easily.
